The story of our programmes in Neuron Learning begins with four research scientists: Michael Merzenich, William Jenkins, Paula Tallal, and Steven Miller.
Their collaboration proved that the underlying cognitive processes that influence speech and language problems could be identified—and permanently improved.

In research completed in Stanford University in the United States functional MRI was performed on 20 children with dyslexia (8–12 years old) during phonological processing before and after a remediation program focused on auditory processing and oral language training.
These findings led to the development of the Fast ForWord program, a groundbreaking computer-based reading intervention. The scientists then licenced their program via their universities to help struggling readers.

Our brains were created to reinvent and reconfigure themselves throughout our lifetimes. This ability is known as brain plasticity. Fast ForWord was one of the first programmes that applied this scientific knowledge to education.
Another study showed progressive training such as Fast ForWord could actually accelerate the rate at which the brain changed.
The normalization of activation pattern was seen both immediately after intervention as well as 1 year after it, suggesting long-lasting remedial effects as researched by Ylinen and Kujala in the Frontiers of Psychology review
